I removed the clear drain tubing from the central air conditioning unit attached to our furnace which was draining directly into the sewer from our home. I just lifted the clear air conditioner drain pipe out of the pipe draining into the sewer and placed it into a 5 gallon pail. In a matter of 24 hours we are collecting 5 gallons (+ or – a quart) of clear water for our outdoor plants. Such an effortless means of conserving valuable water during difficult times of water shortage.

We are conserving water in our home by applying similar principles as recycling: Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. One way we reduce our water consumption is with a low-flow shower head attachment, and taking very short showers. Reusing & Recycling water is accomplished by having a pail, bowl or bucket under each faucet. (Rinse dishes in a bowl, wash hands in a pail, capture & scoop shower water into a bucket.) This allows all the used water to be captured for reuse and recycling for watering plants, as well as dumping into the toilet to flush via gravity.

We built a small garden and bought a new rain barrel to water it.

We have been collecting rain water, as a family, after every rain and watering our plants and grass with it.

We are using only collected rain water for our plants, waiting for next year to plant trees.

We went to the dollar store, picked up and planted our fake flowers… no water required and they look pretty good too! Lol

Sometimes, we plug our bathtub when we shower, and run a hose from the bathtub, through our upstairs window and into our garden.
